This was both my favorite and least favorite part of our trip to Bavaria. It was my favorite because it was absolutely stunning. It was my least favorite because it was a terrifying grueling hike where we had to carry most of our children. If I had known what this hike entailed, I would NOT have gone with the kids.
We started with a 40 minute walk up a slight hill the whole way to the entrance of the gorge. (They said 20 minutes, but 20 minutes with kids takes 40.) My husband wanted to turn back, but I was insistent on seeing it, and I told him we were almost there. That was true, but I didn’t know that the path was one-way and the rest of the loop was 3x as long…
But then we entered the gorge and saw this:
We finally emerged on the other side of the gorge to find… stairs. Lots and lots of stairs.
We had to walk up for about 30 minutes. The girls could not make it, so my poor husband had to carry both our 4 year old AND our 2 year old up all the steps. I was carrying Hiccup.
Then there were still about 30 minutes of walking to follow — but we were so beat, we splurged and took a carriage ride instead.
Phew! That was a long morning!
